Berthold Salander
1887- 1959 Violinist, born in Vienna, studied violin at the Royal Academy of Music Vienna. 1913 member, until 1932 President of the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra. In the orchestra he was section leader of the second violins. Berthold Salander was dismissed from the orchestra in 1938 and managed to flee to the USA in 1941. His son Wilhelm (William) who had completed his clarinet studies at the Vienna Academy of Music had been able to flee to the USA at an earlier date.
At first, Berthold Salander played with the New Orleans Philharmonic Orchestra, later on he and his family moved to New York where he played with the New Friends of Music and the Salzburg Chamber Players. Berthold Salander was awarded the Nikolai Medal. The 'Philharmoniker Ring' (Ring of Honour of the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra) was introduced at his instigation. His grandson Roger Salander is a clarinet - soloist and instructor at the Wiener Konservatorium. return to the list of the musicians
